Hazard / issue The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Commission, the above-mentioned product is being recalled as it contained aflatoxin B1 exceeding the EU's standard. Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted local importers for follow-up and a preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product. The aflatoxin level of the product also exceeded the local legal standard. The World Health Organization (WHO)'s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified naturally occurring aflatoxins as carcinogenic to humans, and the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives advised that intake of aflatoxins should be reduced to levels as low as reasonably possible although no health-based guidance value has been set. Aflatoxins can lead to liver cancer after long-term ingestion, and the risk for hepatitis B carriers is relatively high.
Remedy / action
- Not to consume the affected batch of the product.
- The importer has stopped selling and removed from shelves the affected batch of the product upon the CFS's instructions and has initiated a recall.
- The CFS has alerted the trade to the incident, and will continue to follow up and take appropriate action.
- The investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the affected batch of the product immediately if they possess it.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Not to consume a kind of baby snack imported from UK suspected to be contaminated with aflatoxin
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) collected the above-mentioned sample from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that it contained aflatoxin B1 at a level of 0.14 micrograms per kilogram. Under the Harmful Substances in Food Regulation (Cap 132AF), the maximum concentration for aflatoxin B1 in any other food intended to be consumed principally by persons under the age of 36 months other than infant formula and follow-up formula manufactured from milk protein is 0.1 micrograms per kilogram. The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Commission, according to information from the French authorities, the above-mentioned product is being recalled due to possible sealing defects that may affect health.

The CFS announced earlier that a sample of bottled preserved bean curd collected under its routine Food Surveillance Programme from a retail outlet in Sai Ying Pun was found to contain an excessive amount of Bacillus cereus . When following up on the incident, the CFS further collected the above-mentioned sample from a retail outlet in Yau Ma Tei on July 9 for testing. The test result showed that the sample contained Bacillus cereus at a level of 1 300 000 per gram. According to the Microbiological Guidelines for Food, if ready-to-eat food contains Bacillus cereus at a level of more than 100 000 per gram, it is considered unsatisfactory. Bacillus cereus is commonly found in the environment. Unhygienic conditions in food processing and storage may give rise to its growth. Consuming food contaminated with excessive Bacillus cereus or its heat-stable toxins may cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

The CFS received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned batch of product might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and was being recalled. Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the local importer for follow-up. A preliminary investigation found that the importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product.
