Hazard / issue The CFS noted a notification from the RASFF of the EU that the above-mentioned product is being recalled as it contained aflatoxin exceeding the EU's standard.
Remedy / action
- Not to consume the affected product if they have bought any.
- Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the local importers for follow-up.
- 8 kilograms in total of the affected batch of the product concerned, which has been distributed to the retailer mentioned above for sale.
- The aflatoxin level of the product also exceeded the local legal standard.
- The importer concerned has stopped sale and discarded the unsold products of the affected batch and initiated a recall according to the CFS's instructions.
- The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and will continue to follow up and take appropriate action.
- An investigation is ongoing.
- The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.

Not to consume a batch of prepackaged rice with excessive cadmium found
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) collected the above-mentioned sample at the import level for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained cadmium at a level of 0.24 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the legal limit of 0.2 ppm. Long-term excessive intake of cadmium may affect the kidney functions.

Preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified ethylene oxide as a Group 1 carcinogen. According to the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation (Cap. 132CM), a food for human consumption containing pesticide residue may only be sold if consumption of the food is not dangerous or prejudicial to health.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Veterinary drug chloramphenicol found in prepackaged frozen jade perch sample
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from an online shop for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained chloramphenicol at a level of one microgram per kilogram. According to the Harmful Substances in Food Regulations (Cap. 132AF), no fish (including shellfish) sold in Hong Kong for human consumption is allowed to contain chloramphenicol. Offenders will be liable to a fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for six months upon conviction.
