Hazard / issue The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from an online shop for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained methylmercury at a level of 0.83 milligram per kilogram, exceeding the legal limit of 0.5 mg per kg. At high levels, mercury can affect foetal brain development, and affect vision, hearing, muscle co-ordination and memory in adults. Pregnant women, women planning a pregnancy and young children are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of mercury.
Remedy / action
  • Not to consume the affected batch of the product.
  • The CFS has informed the vendor concerned of the irregularity and instructed it to stop sale and remove from shelves the affected batch of the product.
  • The distributor concerned has initiated a recall according to the CFS's instructions.
  • The CFS is also tracing the source of the product concerned.
  • The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and continue to follow up and take appropriate action.
  • An investigation is ongoing.
  • Stop using or selling the affected batch of the product immediately if in possession.
