Hazard / issue Although the levels consumers are exposed to are likely to be low, they may present a risk to health because they contain MOAH. Consumption of the affected sweets is of toxicological concern, especially in younger age groups and where consumers eat a lot of the products or eat it regularly. MOAH can cause damage to DNA and has the potential to increase the risk of cancer, particularly if consumed in high quantities over a prolonged period of time. MOAH is a genotoxic carcinogen, therefore no exposure is without risk to human health.
Remedy / action
- If you have bought any of the above products, do not eat them. Instead, dispose of them at home. If you are concerned, notify your Trading Standards department or Environmental Health department in the Local Authority for the area in which you purchased the products.
- We are asking enforcement authorities to ensure that businesses who may have been supplied with or received the affected products take action to ensure that unsafe products are withdrawn from the market and, where sold at retail, recalled.
- We are also asking the Local Authorities to inform the FSA of product recall and withdrawal actions.

Food Alert "For Action": To: Food Businesses and Consumers who have purchased and sold frozen products supplied by Inarah’s Frozen Foods Ltd
Inarah’s Frozen Foods Ltd has been unable to demonstrate that the products in this alert have been produced and handled safely. Products that have not met food hygiene and safety requirements pose a risk to consumers and may be unsafe to eat. The products are known to have been supplied to food businesses across the UK. Photos of these brand labels are attached below. These brands cover a wide range of frozen products including chicken, beef, fish and vegetarian items, packaged in different size packaging with multiple best before dates and/or batch numbers. These products have one of the below company names and addresses on the labels: Inarah Frozen Foods LTD, Regal Drive, Walsall, WS2 9HQ Four Seasons Food Group, Unit 7-8 Monarch Works, Elswick Road, Fenton Industrial Estate, Stoke-on-Trent, ST4 2SH KBH Foods, BD9 4TS All frozen products with either “Inarah’s Frozen Foods”, “Inarah’s Fine Foods” or “New York Crispy” with one of the above addresses are included in this alert. Food businesses selling these products in the UK are advised to immediately stop sales, undertake product withdrawals and where there have been retail sales, to undertake product recalls. Products should be disposed of safely.

The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample of prepackaged bamboo fungi from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained sulphur dioxide at a level of 9,600 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the legal limit of 500 ppm. The functional class and name of the additive were also not declared on the food label. Sulphur dioxide is a commonly used preservative in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. This preservative is water soluble, most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.
