Hazard / issue - The CFS collected the above-mentioned noodle samples at the import level for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test results showed that the noodle sample contained sulphur dioxide at a level of 68 parts per million, exceeding the legal limit of 20 ppm, and the functional class and name of the additive were also not declared on the food label. - Sulphur dioxide is a preservative which can be used in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. Sulphur dioxide is water soluble, and most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.
Remedy / action
- Should not consume the affected batch of the product - The CFS has informed the vendor and importer concerned of the irregularities and instructed them to stop sales and remove from shelves the affected batch of the product.
- The importer concerned has initiated recall according to the CFS's instruction.
- - The CFS will alert the trade, continue to follow up on the incidents and take appropriate action.
- Investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the affected batch of the product immediately if possess any of it

Prepackaged bamboo fungi sample detected with sulphur dioxide, a preservative, exceeding legal limit and in breach of food labelling regulation
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample of prepackaged bamboo fungi from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained sulphur dioxide at a level of 9,600 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the legal limit of 500 ppm. The functional class and name of the additive were also not declared on the food label. Sulphur dioxide is a commonly used preservative in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. This preservative is water soluble, most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is being recalled as it was detected with ethylene oxide. Preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified ethylene oxide as a Group 1 carcinogen. According to the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation (Cap. 132CM), a food for human consumption containing pesticide residue may only be sold if consumption of the food is not dangerous or prejudicial to health.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Veterinary drug chloramphenicol found in prepackaged frozen jade perch sample
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from an online shop for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained chloramphenicol at a level of one microgram per kilogram. According to the Harmful Substances in Food Regulations (Cap. 132AF), no fish (including shellfish) sold in Hong Kong for human consumption is allowed to contain chloramphenicol. Offenders will be liable to a fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for six months upon conviction.
