Hazard / issue The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) has learned that the French authorities have issued a notification stating that the above products may be contaminated with Yersinia enterocolitica and are recalling them. Preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported the affected products in question. Yersinia enterocolitica can cause Yersinia disease, which causes common symptoms of gastroenteritis, such as fever, diarrhea (often bloody diarrhea in young children) and abdominal pain. This bacterium It is usually contracted by eating or drinking contaminated food, including undercooked meat, unpasteurized dairy products, or contaminated water. Anyone can become infected with yersinosis, but young children, The elderly and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk.
Remedy / action
  • Members of the public should not consume the affected product.
  • The importer has removed the affected products from the shelves and stopped selling them, and has launched a recall.
  • The CFS will notify the industry of the incident and will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate actions.

CFS continues to follow up on imported cheese with possible bacteria contamination

- The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) noted a notification from the French authorities that the above-mentioned batch of product might have been contaminated with Yersinia enterocolitica and is being recalled. - Subsequent to an earlier announcement that a kind of cheese imported from France might have been contaminated with Yersinia enterocolitica ( https://www.cfs.gov.hk/english/press/20241122_11290.html ), a follow-up investigation showed that another batch of the affected product has also been imported to Hong Kong. - Yersinia enterocolitica can cause Yersiniosis, which is characterised by common symptoms of gastroenteritis such as fever, diarrhoea (often bloody in young children) and abdominal pain. The bacterium is usually acquired by eating or drinking contaminated food, including undercooked meat, unpasteurised milk products or contaminated water. Anyone can get Yersiniosis, but young children, the elderly, and people with weak immune systems are at a higher risk.

CFS urges public not to consume batch of prepackaged dry sausage suspected to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Commission that the above-mentioned batch of product might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and is being recalled. Not to consume a kind of prepackaged frozen sardines detected with histamine

The CFS collected the abovementioned frozen sardine sample from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained histamine at a level of 1,100 milligrams per kilogram. Histamine is commonly found in certain kinds of fish such as tuna, sardine, mackerel and anchovy, as a result of bacterial spoilage. Consumption of fish containing high levels of histamine can cause foodborne intoxication. Symptoms of histamine poisoning include tingling and burning sensations around the mouth, facial flushing and sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache, palpitations, dizziness and rash. The onset of intoxication symptoms is within a few hours after consumption, and these symptoms will normally disappear within 12 hours without long-term effects.

Not to consume a batch of imported prepackaged raw milk cheese suspected to be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is under recall due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected batch of the product has been imported into Hong Kong. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned. People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. Intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome may also develop in some people.

Not to consume two kinds of French cheese suspected to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Commission that the above-mentioned products are being recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importers had imported into Hong Kong the affected batches of the products concerned. Listeria monocytogenes can be easily destroyed by cooking but can survive and multiply at refrigerator temperature. Most healthy individuals do not develop symptoms or only have mild symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, headache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea when infected. However, severe complications such as septicaemia, meningitis or even death may occur in newborns, the elderly and those with a weaker immune system. Although infected pregnant women may just experience mild symptoms generally, the infection of Listeria monocytogenes may cause miscarriage, infant death, preterm birth, or severe infection in newborns.
