Hazard / issue The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is under recall due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected batch of the product has been imported into Hong Kong. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned. People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. Intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome may also develop in some people.
Remedy / action
- Not to consume the affected product.
- Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted local importers to follow up.
- The importer has stopped sales, removed from shelves the affected batch of the product concerned and has initiated a recall according to the CFS's instructions.
- The CFS has alerted the trade to the incident, and will continue to follow up and take appropriate action.
- The investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the affected product immediately if in possession.

The CFS received a notification from the importer that the above-mentioned product may have a risk of leakage due to an increase in pressure inside the bottle. The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a vending machine in Tseung Kwan O for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained 140 coliform bacteria per gram, exceeding the legal limit. The fact that the coliform count exceeded the legal limit indicated that the hygienic conditions were unsatisfactory, but did not mean that consumption would lead to food poisoning.
