Hazard / issue The product is being recalled by Ace Amusements because samples have tested positive for tremolite asbestos. The product may cause a risk to health as asbestos has been detected in some samples after laboratory testing. Importantly, respirable asbestos has not been detected in any of the tested samples. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising. The risk that any asbestos found, that is likely to be airborne or fine enough for inhalation, is low.
Remedy / action
- Stop using the products immediately. Please return to the store where the product was purchased for a ticket refund. Modern Brands have recalled this product because independent laboratory testing has detected naturally occurring Chrysotile asbestos in some samples of Galt - Mini Makes - Sand Stickers. Importantly, no respirable asbestos has been detected. The presence of asbestos fibre bundles does not imply that there is a risk of asbestos exposure. Asbestos fibres are hazardous only if they are sufficiently fine, airborne and inhaled in sufficient quantity. The release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising. Product Safety New Zealand recall Funkee Animals and Secret Menu Stretchee Foodz - sold at multiple toy retailers
Planet Fun are recalling this product because independent laboratory testing has detected naturally occurring Chrysotile and Tremolite asbestos in some samples of Funkee Animals and Secret Menu Stretchee Foodz. The asbestos has only been detected in the interior of the product and exposure would only occur if the product is torn. The latest Health New Zealand advice is: Exposure to asbestos does not cause any immediate health problems. The health conditions linked to asbestos develop over a long period – typically 15 to 40 years. The risk of developing asbestos-related health conditions, such as some types of cancer and lung disease, is linked to the nature and quantity of asbestos and the length of time a person was exposed to it. There is no safe level and therefore we try to avoid all exposure. For most people who have these products at home, the quantities involved will be small. That is very different to the greater risk for people who might be exposed during construction work or through the mining industry.

Product Safety New Zealand recall HTI Stretcherz Slammerz sold at City Beach
The toy is being recalled by City Beach because the sand inside may contain asbestos. HTI Toys HK Limited has issued a recall overseas in relation to the Stretcherz product range on the basis that the ‘sand’ inside the products may contain asbestos, and there is a risk of exposure if the product is damaged. City Beach considers that it is highly likely that the ‘sand’ originated from the same source as the other products subject to a separate recall overseas.
