The product is being recalled by Kmart because the gel pak may include ethylene glycol, a toxic substance (rather than the non-toxic ingredient glycerol). If packaging becomes damaged, ethylene glycol can leak out and if swallowed, can cause irreversible injuries or death.

The Warehouse is recalling this product as, although their own independent expert testing in November 2025 to the AS 5370:2024 standard produced a ‘no asbestos detected’ result, a NZ laboratory engaged by MBIE Product Safety to undertake a subsequent test to the previous AS 4964:2004 standard has indicated that they believe there may be traces of chrysotile and tremolite asbestos in some samples. The Warehouse advise that respirable asbestos has not been detected in any of the tested samples and the release of respirable asbestos fibres is unlikely to occur in its current state, unless the sand is processed by mechanical means such as crushing or pulverising. The Warehouse also advises that the risk that any asbestos which may be found in the product is likely to be airborne or fine enough for inhalation, is low.
