Hazard / issue The CFS collected the shrimp sample from an online shop for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that it contained metabolite (AOZ) of furazolidone (a type of nitrofurans), a non-permitted veterinary drug at a level of 9.2 parts per billion.
Remedy / action
  • Members of the public should not consume the affected batch of the product.
  • The CFS has informed the vendor concerned of the irregularity and instructed it to stop sale and remove from shelves the affected batch of the product.
  • According to the CFS's instructions, the packer has initiated a recall on the affected batch of the product.
  • The CFS will alert the Vietnamese authorities and the trade, and will continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action.
  • An investigation is ongoing.
  • The trade should stop using or selling the affected batch of the product immediately if they possess it.

Not to consume certain batches of powdered infant and young children formula

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS), through its Food Incident Surveillance System, noted earlier that certain batches of Nestlé powdered infant formula were being voluntarily recalled in Europe due to possible contamination with Bacillus cereus. According to the latest information from Nestlé HK, 21 batches of its powdered infant and young children formula imported into Hong Kong might have used the raw material concerned. Bacillus cereus is commonly found in the environment. Unhygienic conditions in food processing and storage may give rise to its growth. Cereulide is a heat-stable toxin produced in food by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Consuming food contaminated with excessive Bacillus cereus or its heat-stable toxins may cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

Not to consume two kinds of French cheese suspected to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the European Commission that the above-mentioned products are being recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importers had imported into Hong Kong the affected batches of the products concerned. Listeria monocytogenes can be easily destroyed by cooking but can survive and multiply at refrigerator temperature. Most healthy individuals do not develop symptoms or only have mild symptoms such as fever, muscle pain, headache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea when infected. However, severe complications such as septicaemia, meningitis or even death may occur in newborns, the elderly and those with a weaker immune system. Although infected pregnant women may just experience mild symptoms generally, the infection of Listeria monocytogenes may cause miscarriage, infant death, preterm birth, or severe infection in newborns.

Not to consume salty chicken due to the presence of Salmonella

The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from exhibition booth 3B15 at the Hong Kong Food Festival in Wan Chai for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed the presence of Salmonella in 25 grams of the sample, exceeding the criterion of the Microbiological Guidelines for Food which states that Salmonella should not be detected in 25g of a ready-to-eat food sample. Salmonella infection may cause fever and gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The effects on infants, young children, the elderly and people with a weak immune system could be more severe and may even lead to death.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) collected the above-mentioned sample at the import level for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. Preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified ethylene oxide as a Group 1 carcinogen. According to the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation (Cap. 132CM), a food for human consumption containing pesticide residue may only be sold if consumption of the food is not dangerous or prejudicial to health.
