Hazard / issue The CFS received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned batches of product might have been contaminated with Bacillus cereus and are being recalled. Bacillus cereus is commonly found in the environment. Unhygienic conditions in food processing and storage may give rise to its growth. Consuming food contaminated with excessive Bacillus cereus or its heat-stable toxins may cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhoea.
Remedy / action
  • Not to consume the affected product if they have bought any.
  • Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the concerned local importer for follow-up.
  • A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had ordered and imported into Hong Kong the affected batches of the product concerned.
  • The importer concerned has stopped sales, has removed the affected product from shelves and has initiated a recall according to the instructions of the CFS.
  • The CFS will also mark and seal the product ordered by the importer upon its arrival to Hong Kong and ensure that the product will not enter the local market.
  • The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.

Not to consume a kind of prepackaged frozen sardines detected with histamine

The CFS collected the abovementioned frozen sardine sample from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained histamine at a level of 1,100 milligrams per kilogram. Histamine is commonly found in certain kinds of fish such as tuna, sardine, mackerel and anchovy, as a result of bacterial spoilage. Consumption of fish containing high levels of histamine can cause foodborne intoxication. Symptoms of histamine poisoning include tingling and burning sensations around the mouth, facial flushing and sweating, nausea, vomiting, headache, palpitations, dizziness and rash. The onset of intoxication symptoms is within a few hours after consumption, and these symptoms will normally disappear within 12 hours without long-term effects.

Not to consume a batch of bottled preserved bean curd containing excessive Bacillus cereus

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) collected the above-mentioned sample from a supermarket in Wan Chai for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained Bacillus cereus at a level of 180,000 per gram. According to the Microbiological Guidelines for Food, if ready-to-eat food contains Bacillus cereus at a level of more than 100,000 per gram, it is considered unsatisfactory. Bacillus cereus is commonly found in the environment. Unhygienic conditions in food processing and storage may give rise to its growth. Consuming food contaminated with excessive Bacillus cereus or its heat-stable toxins may cause gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting and diarrhoea.

Not to consume a batch of imported prepackaged raw milk cheese suspected to be contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is under recall due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected batch of the product has been imported into Hong Kong. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned. People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. Intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome may also develop in some people.
