Hazard / issue The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) collected the above-mentioned preserved mustard greens sample from a retail outlet in Wan Chai for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained sulphur dioxide but the functional class and the name of the additive were not declared on the food label of the sample concerned. Sulphur dioxide is a commonly used preservative in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. Sulphur dioxide is water soluble, and most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.
Remedy / action
- Consumers who are allergic to sulphur dioxide should not consume the concerned product(s). They should seek medical treatment if they feel unwell after consuming it/them.
- The CFS has informed the vendor concerned of the irregularity and instructed it to stop sale and remove from shelves the affected batch of the product.
- According to the CFS's instructions, the distributor concerned has initiated a recall on the affected batch of the product.
- The CFS will alert the trade, continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action.
- Investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the affected batch(es) of the product(s) without proper food label immediately.

The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample of prepackaged bamboo fungi from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained sulphur dioxide at a level of 9,600 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the legal limit of 500 ppm. The functional class and name of the additive were also not declared on the food label. Sulphur dioxide is a commonly used preservative in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. This preservative is water soluble, most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Veterinary drug chloramphenicol found in prepackaged frozen jade perch sample
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from an online shop for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained chloramphenicol at a level of one microgram per kilogram. According to the Harmful Substances in Food Regulations (Cap. 132AF), no fish (including shellfish) sold in Hong Kong for human consumption is allowed to contain chloramphenicol. Offenders will be liable to a fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for six months upon conviction.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Not to consume prepackaged mushroom powder due to the presence of ethylene oxide
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a retail outlet in Tsuen Wan for testing. The test result showed that the sample contained a pesticide, ethylene oxide. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified ethylene oxide as a Group 1 carcinogen. According to the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation (Cap. 132CM), a food for human consumption containing pesticide residue may only be sold if consumption of the food is not dangerous or prejudicial to health.
