Hazard / issue The CFS, upon learning that food and beverages which were made with suspected problematic red fermented rice are recently being recalled in Japan, immediately contacted importers and retailers for follow-up. A preliminary investigation found that a retail outlet in Causeway Bay had sold the affected bottled black vinegar product.
Remedy / action
- Not to consume the affected products if they have bought any. Members of the public should consult medical professionals if they intend to consume food products containing red fermented rice for improving health conditions.
- The above-mentioned importer has stopped sales and removed from shelves the affected product, and has initiated a recall according to the CFS's instructions.
- The CFS has alerted the trade and will continue to follow up on the case and take appropriate action.
- The CFS has also enhanced relevant surveillance and will closely monitor the latest developments in the Japanese authority's recalls of relevant food products.
- The investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the products concerned immediately if they possess them.

Prepackaged bamboo fungi sample detected with sulphur dioxide, a preservative, exceeding legal limit and in breach of food labelling regulation
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample of prepackaged bamboo fungi from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained sulphur dioxide at a level of 9,600 parts per million (ppm), exceeding the legal limit of 500 ppm. The functional class and name of the additive were also not declared on the food label. Sulphur dioxide is a commonly used preservative in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. This preservative is water soluble, most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Veterinary drug chloramphenicol found in prepackaged frozen jade perch sample
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from an online shop for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained chloramphenicol at a level of one microgram per kilogram. According to the Harmful Substances in Food Regulations (Cap. 132AF), no fish (including shellfish) sold in Hong Kong for human consumption is allowed to contain chloramphenicol. Offenders will be liable to a fine of $50,000 and to imprisonment for six months upon conviction.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Not to consume prepackaged mushroom powder due to the presence of ethylene oxide
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a retail outlet in Tsuen Wan for testing. The test result showed that the sample contained a pesticide, ethylene oxide. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified ethylene oxide as a Group 1 carcinogen. According to the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation (Cap. 132CM), a food for human consumption containing pesticide residue may only be sold if consumption of the food is not dangerous or prejudicial to health.

The CFS, through its Food Incident Surveillance System, noted a notification from the Taiwan authority that the above-mentioned product might have used an ingredient which contained sudan dyes. Sudan dyes are synthetic chemical dyes for industrial use. Under the Colouring Matter in Food Regulations (Cap. 132H), sudan dyes are not permitted in food.

Do not consume a batch of bottled apple juice drink with patulin concentration exceeding legal limit
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a supermarket in Yuen Long for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained a mycotoxin, patulin, at a level of 78 micrograms per kilogram, exceeding the legal limit of 50 micrograms per kilogram of the food. Patulin mostly occurs in rotten apple and its products. Animal studies have shown that ingesting high doses of patulin can induce liver, spleen and kidney damage, as well as toxicity to the immune system. For humans, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances and vomiting have been reported.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Not to consume batches of prepackaged almond milk and walnut milk with non-permitted preservative salicylic acid
The CFS collected the above-mentioned prepackaged almond milk and walnut milk samples from an online vendor for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the two samples contained salicylic acid at a level of 148 parts per million (ppm) and 148.4 ppm respectively. Salicylic acid may cause nausea, vomiting, and stomach discomfort. Under the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap. 132 BD), salicylic acid is not a permitted preservative in food.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Macao authorities that the above-mentioned bottled water was detected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa found in bottled water may indicate contamination of the water source and/or during the manufacture, packaging, transport and storage process. The presence of a large amount of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in packaged water can be associated with changes in taste, odour and turbidity, but rarely causes severe diseases to healthy persons generally.

The CFS, through its Food Incident Surveillance System, noted a notification from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, that the above-mentioned product was being recalled in Japan due to a possible quality problem. Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted local importers for follow-up. A preliminary investigation revealed that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batches of the product concerned.
