Hazard / issue The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Macao authorities that the above-mentioned bottled water was detected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa found in bottled water may indicate contamination of the water source and/or during the manufacture, packaging, transport and storage process. The presence of a large amount of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in packaged water can be associated with changes in taste, odour and turbidity, but rarely causes severe diseases to healthy persons generally.
Remedy / action
- Not to consume the affected batch of the product.
- Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the local importer to follow-up.
- The importer concerned has initiated a recall on the affected product according to the CFS' instructions.
- The CFS will alert the trade, continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action.
- An investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the affected batch of the product immediately if in possession.

Not to consume a batch of imported prepackaged salami suspected to be contaminated with Salmonella
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) through its Food Incident Surveillance System, noted a notification from the Singapore Food Agency that the above-mentioned product might have been contaminated by Salmonella and is being recalled. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned distributor had sold the affected product. Salmonella infection may cause fever and gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The effects on infants, young children, the elderly and persons with a weak immune system could be more severe and may even lead to death.

The CFS conducted follow-up investigations in a supermarket in Sham Shui Po, and found that the scallop-flavoured noodle sample contained sulphur dioxide. Although the sulphur dioxide level is below the maximum permitted level under the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap. 132BD), but the functional class and the name of the additive were not declared on the food label. Sulphur dioxide is a preservative which can be used in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. Sulphur dioxide is water soluble, and most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.

The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a supermarket in Sham Shui Po for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme.
