Hazard / issue The CFS noted a notification from the Food and Drug Administration of the USA that the above-mentioned product is being recalled in the USA due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O121.
Remedy / action
  • Not to consume the affected product if they have bought any.
  • Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted the local importers for follow-up.
  • A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected product concerned.
  • As a precautionary measure, the importer concerned has stopped selling and removed from shelves the affected product upon the CFS's instructions and has initiated a recall.
  • The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and continue to follow up and take appropriate action.
  • An investigation is ongoing.
  • The trade should stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if they possess it.

Not to consume a batch of imported prepackaged salami suspected to be contaminated with Salmonella

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) through its Food Incident Surveillance System, noted a notification from the Singapore Food Agency that the above-mentioned product might have been contaminated by Salmonella and is being recalled. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned distributor had sold the affected product. Salmonella infection may cause fever and gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea. The effects on infants, young children, the elderly and persons with a weak immune system could be more severe and may even lead to death.

Not to consume a kind of bottled water suspected to be contaminated with bacteria

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Macao authorities that the above-mentioned bottled water was detected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa found in bottled water may indicate contamination of the water source and/or during the manufacture, packaging, transport and storage process. The presence of a large amount of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in packaged water can be associated with changes in taste, odour and turbidity, but rarely causes severe diseases to healthy persons generally.

(Updated on 31 Dec 2024) Undeclared allergen (sulphur dioxide) found in prepackaged scallop-flavoured noodle sample

The CFS conducted follow-up investigations in a supermarket in Sham Shui Po, and found that the scallop-flavoured noodle sample contained sulphur dioxide. Although the sulphur dioxide level is below the maximum permitted level under the Preservatives in Food Regulation (Cap. 132BD), but the functional class and the name of the additive were not declared on the food label. Sulphur dioxide is a preservative which can be used in a variety of foods including dried vegetables, dried fruits, pickled vegetables and salted fish products. Sulphur dioxide is water soluble, and most of it can be removed through washing and cooking. However, susceptible individuals who are allergic to this preservative may experience breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea after consumption.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is under recall due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected batch of the product has been imported into Hong Kong. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned. People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. Intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome may also develop in some people.

People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. Intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome may also develop in some people.

Food Alert－Not to consume a kind of ice cream detected with coliform bacteria counts exceeding legal limits

The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample for testing from a food stall at an expo on Lantau under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained 110 coliform bacteria per gram, exceeding the legal limit. Under the Frozen Confections Regulation (Cap 132 AC), frozen confection for sale should not contain more than 100 coliform bacteria per gram. The maximum penalty for offenders is a fine of $10,000 and three months' imprisonment upon conviction. The fact that the coliform count exceeded the legal limit indicated that the hygienic conditions were unsatisfactory, but did not mean that consumption would lead to food poisoning.
