Hazard / issue - The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) through its Food Incident Surveillance System noted a notification from the Rappel Conso of France that the above-mentioned product is being recalled in France due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Upon learning of the incident, the CFS immediately contacted local importers for follow-up. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batches of the product concerned. - People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. Intestinal bleeding and serious complications such as hemolytic uraemic syndrome may also develop in some people.
Remedy / action
  • Not to consume the affected batches of the product if have bought any - The importer concerned has stopped sale and removed the affected batches of the product from shelves and initiated a recall according to the CFS's instructions.
  • - The CFS will alert the trade to the incident, and will continue to follow up and take appropriate action.
  • The investigation is ongoing.
  • Stop using or selling the product concerned immediately if possess it

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned product is under recall due to possible contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). According to the information provided by the RASFF, the affected batch of the product has been imported into Hong Kong. A preliminary investigation found that the above-mentioned importer had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned. People will contract STEC-causing gastro-intestinal disease through consumption of contaminated water or undercooked and contaminated foods. The CFS received a notification from the importer that the above-mentioned product may have a risk of leakage due to an increase in pressure inside the bottle. The importer confirmed that it had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned, and has therefore voluntarily initiated a recall as a precautionary measure." Risk assessment of the CFS showed that the increase of pressure inside the bottle may pose a risk of bottle breakage.

Listeria monocytogenes can be easily destroyed by cooking but can survive and multiply at refrigerator temperatures. However, severe complications such as septicaemia, meningitis or even death may occur in newborns, the elderly and those with a weaker immune system. Although infected pregnant women may just experience mild symptoms generally, the infection of Listeria monocytogenes may cause miscarriage, infant death, preterm birth, or severe infection in newborns.

The CFS received a notification from the RASFF of the European Commission that the above-mentioned batches of product might have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and are being recalled. Listeria monocytogenes can be easily destroyed by cooking but can survive and multiply at refrigerator temperature. Most healthy individuals do not develop symptoms or only have mild symptoms like fever, muscle pain, headache, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea when infected. However, severe complications such as septicaemia, meningitis or even death may occur in newborns, the elderly and those with a weaker immune system. Although infected pregnant women may just experience mild symptoms generally, the infection of Listeria monocytogenes may cause miscarriage, infant death, preterm birth, or severe infection in newborns. In order to reduce the risk of listeriosis, susceptible populations such as pregnant women should consume freshly prepared hot food where possible, reheat chilled food until it is hot all the way through, and avoid high-risk foods, including ready-to-eat food such as cold cuts, cold smoked seafood, soft cheeses, salads, etc, or cook them thoroughly before consumption, even if they are presented as part of a dish.
