Hazard / issue The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the importer that the above-mentioned product did not indicate the best before date according to the requirements stipulated in Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) Regulations (Cap. 132W). For the sake of prudence, the importer has voluntarily stopped sales and removed from shelves the affected product and initiated a recall.
Remedy / action
- Not to consume the affected product. Members of the public can identify the affected product from the package without the best before date and batch number.
- The CFS will alert the trade, continue to follow up on the incident and take appropriate action.
- Should there be sufficient evidence, prosecution will be instituted.
- Investigation is ongoing.
- Stop using or selling the affected product immediately should they possess it.

Do not consume a batch of bottled apple juice drink with patulin concentration exceeding legal limit
The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a supermarket in Yuen Long for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained a mycotoxin, patulin, at a level of 78 micrograms per kilogram, exceeding the legal limit of 50 micrograms per kilogram of the food. Patulin mostly occurs in rotten apple and its products. Animal studies have shown that ingesting high doses of patulin can induce liver, spleen and kidney damage, as well as toxicity to the immune system. For humans, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances and vomiting have been reported.

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) received a notification from the Macao authorities that the above-mentioned bottled water was detected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa found in bottled water may indicate contamination of the water source and/or during the manufacture, packaging, transport and storage process. The presence of a large amount of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in packaged water can be associated with changes in taste, odour and turbidity, but rarely causes severe diseases to healthy persons generally.

The CFS collected the above-mentioned sample from a retail outlet in Tsuen Wan for testing under its routine Food Surveillance Programme. The test result showed that the sample contained milk, an allergen, but it was not declared on the product's food label. People who are allergic to milk may have an immunologic response like vomiting, diarrhoea and rash upon consumption of food containing this allergen. In severe cases, anaphylactic shock may even develop. As for other members of the public, generally speaking, they would not be subject to such reactions when the food in question is consumed. The Food and Drugs (Composition and Labelling) Regulations (Cap. 132W) require that all prepackaged food for sale in Hong Kong should list out the food ingredients in its list of ingredients. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.

Hong Kong CFS food alert Not to consume batch of Japanese bottled alcoholic drink with potential leakage and bottle breakage risk
The CFS received a notification from the importer that the above-mentioned product may have a risk of leakage due to an increase in pressure inside the bottle. The importer confirmed that it had imported into Hong Kong the affected batch of the product concerned, and has therefore voluntarily initiated a recall as a precautionary measure." Risk assessment of the CFS showed that the increase of pressure inside the bottle may pose a risk of bottle breakage.
